Model 249-Smart Lineartester / 249-Smart XL Lineartester

Scratch Hardness Testing

Multi-function device, scratch, rub, wipe, chemicals, with an electromotive drive; scratch length single stroke 50 – 110 mm; double stroke 35 – 150 mm (without test tools)

The optimised scratch hardness tester LINEARTESTER 249 Smart is intended, in addition to its original purpose of application, i. e. to establish the ability of a surfaces to resist damage by scratching, also for several other tests: Scribe/Scratch tests; To and frocycle abrasion tests; Crockmeter tests; MEK tests; tests determining the resistance against solvents in general or wipe test, respectively.

The LINEARTESTER 249 Smart is a tabletop device that is operated via a capacitive LCD display. The electromotive drive ensures a uniform forward motion of the slide. The test tool is lowered and lifted automatically when scratch/scribe tests are carried out. A multitude of different test tools are available (see table in the technical description below). The tools marked with (*) are made of Tungsten Carbide Steel, additionally covered with an extremely hard layer. Due to this layer’s “golden” appearance, any worn parts are visually very easy recognizable because the Tungsten Carbide Material under the “golden” layer has a distincly different color. With the optional available universal adapter set (see last page of the technical description) even also several user-specifc tool inserts can be used.

Principle of the Test: The test panel is fixed onto a mobile slide by means of clamping rails. Above this slide and held on two metal pillars is a reciprocating beam bedded in a free-moving manner and carrying the adequate test tool as well as a weight. The required scratching force in the range of (0.5 to 20)N is set by moving the weight along the reciprocating beam, making use of a setting scale (an additional load weight of (1 to 40)N is optionally available). The testing machine is equipped with a 4-position height adjustable load arm device with standard height of about 10 mm (+20/+40/+60 mm). To use the vertical adjustment, a set of sample clamping pieces are also required (Order No. 21010232). Operation (settings) is via a capacitive LCD display. To start a scratch/scribe test, the test tool is lowered onto the specimen when moving forward initiating the scratching process immediately. The test panel can be moved sideways so that a series of scratches can be carried out side by side with different force settings. Due to a ruler integrated in the slide plate, an uniform distance between the scratches can be achieved very easily. When testing insulating coatings on conducting substrates, an electric recognition of the through-scratching offers an additional security for setting the scratching force. For abrasion tests, crockmeter tests, MEK or wipe tests the test movement is carried out with the tool lowered onto the specimen, in preset cycles to and fro. For this, the guide plate has to be removed from the slide plate. The test speeds are freely adjustable. The LINEARTESTER Smart is equipped with variable stroke lengths.

ERICHSEN SmartPen

The ERICHSEN SmartPen is used to determine the scratch resistance of surfaces; depending on the used module, it can be used to determine the resistance to scratching, the tendency towards metal marking and the durability of printed markings.  With the ERICHSEN SmartPen, a modular hardness test pencil with digital test force setting and display (resolution 0.05 N) is now available. The SmartPen is supplied in a plastic case with three springs and a USB-C charging cable.

UV Box Model 636

Accelerated weathering tester, UV aging test (UV radiation), moisture condensation.  UV radiation is responsible for almost all the processes of photo degradation of durable materials exposed to the external environment. The fluorescent lamps used in the UV-BOX 636 simulate critical UV short waves and realistically reproduce the damage caused by sunlight. The types of damage that can be simulated with the UV-BOX are the following: color change, loss of gloss, chalking, cracking, cracks, blistering, veiling, brittleness, loss of strength and oxidation. Dew is mainly responsible for most of the moisture that occurs during outdoor exposure, much more than rain. The condensation system of the UV-BOX 636 realistically simulates dew and amplifies its effect through the use of high temperatures.  The condensation process automatically purifies the network water used in the system. This is because the process of evaporation and condensation of water on samples is actually a distillation process, which allows to remove all impurities.  UV-BOX can accommodate up to 48 standard samples (75 mm x 150 mm)¸it is possible to create special sample holders according to customer specifications. The operation is done via a modern touch screen panel.  The UV lamps are not included in the delivery.

The accelerated UV aging test reproduces the damage caused by sunlight, rain and dew. In a few days or weeks of exposure of the samples inside the UV-BOX 636, damages occurring in months or years of outdoor exposure can be reproduced.  Simulate aging due to external atmospheric agents, UV-BOX subjects the materials to alternating cycles of UV radiation and humidity at controlled high temperatures. The instrument simulates the effects of sunlight through the use of special UV fluorescent lamps and the simulation of the effect of dew and rain occurs through condensation or a spray of water (Spray option).

Question: Can you measure 1,500 cups/day?

Answer: YES, using the Erichsen fully automatic zipping measuring system Model 126 Plus Automatic:

***Check out the new fully automatic Model 126 Plus Automatic ear measuring device capable of measuring up to 1500 cups/day.  Combing the proven and recognized measuring technology, software evaluation of our established Model 126 Plus now with new unique features such as camera-based rolling direction detection.

A brief overview of the process- the operator loads individual trays with up to 42 individual test cups. The interchanging magazine can take up to 5 of these trays and can be loaded throughout the ongoing measurement operation. The control system processes the measuring tasks independently and transmits the results to the user’s database.  For this purpose, a tablet is first taken from the changing magazine and fed into the handling system. A barcode scanner checks whether the position of the tablet is used and uniquely identifies the cup to be measured. If the cup cannot be identified, it is automatically ejected separately.

Identified cups are fed to the rolling direction detection module. Here, the precise position of the cup on the suction cup is measured in relation to the rolling direction. Only then is the earing measured, evaluated according to predefined algorithms (taking the rolling direction into account) and data determined transferred to the customer’s database with the ID read from the barcode. The clutch pin is pulled outwards from the locating sleeve, the test head is turned clockwise and the cupping process commences. The cupping test value reached is displayed on a digital counter. The forming process and the appearance of the crack can be observed conveniently looking down onto the blank holder.

Color and Gloss Unit SPEKTROMASTER 565

The overall appearance of a product is influenced by color and gloss. A sample of the same color but higher gloss level is visually perceived darker and more saturated than a low gloss sample. In order to get a uniform appearance, both attributes need to be controlled. The Spectrometers of the very most other suppliers are only able to measure the color value. In comparison with this, the SPEKTROMASTER 565 is able to measure color and gloss both simultaneously! Thus, the cause of a mismatch can be clearly defined in any situation.

Gradient Oven Model 432-SMART

The Model 432 Smart II Gradient oven is used to evaluate the baking and drying behavior of paint and powder coatings, resins, plastics, and similar materials. It can simulate a production process by programming the warm-up rate, burn-in temperature, and time intervals. It allows predictions of how a particular paint reacts to a particular material at different temperatures. The excellent repeatability of the measurements allows a remarkably accurate determination of the actual limit values. Coatings can be tested up to a temperature of 320 °C. If the lacquers are applied with a double doctor blade, two different lacquers can be tested simultaneously on one test sheet.

Purpose and application: Acid rain, bird droppings, fuel, antifreeze and many other environmental factors can damage automotive finishes. Especially in summertime, some substances can be very aggressive

and cause severe damage. Therefore, automotive paint manufacturers as well as auto makers need to find out how different environmental phenomena will interact with a coating system.

For the development of stove enamel systems as well as for their quality testing it is of great importance to assess the temperature range and the max. temperature limit, respectively, where the components of the lacquer formulations (and thus also potentially the properties and the quality of the whole thing) begin to change. The well-known main example for this are the yellowing of binding agents as well as the change in color of pigments

Concerning the subject of baked coatings within industrial production conditions, the accurate control of the corresponding processes is of crucial importance to achieve and continuously maintain/ guarantee the specified qualitative characteristics of the coating. Due to different reasons, the actually existing conditions do not always correspond exactly to the preset process run which in the worst case“ may cause severely high non-conformity costs.

The Gradient-oven 432 Smart offers the possibility of a needs-based optimizing of the process for the product in question.

The „actual condition“ in the stove enameling production line, beforehand determined by means of an oven temperature recorder, can be simulated at the best via a requirement-orientated setting of an appropriate gradient and thus allows a nearly perfect 1:1 simulation of the respective stoving condition, however on the desired laboratory scale saving time and expenses.
